Jiyoon Oh: In Monochrome, She Gathers Time from the Sea Jiyoon Oh’s canvas is time layered over monochrome. She gazes into the sea—not to depict its surface, but to collect the emotions, questions, and light that reside within. At the foundation of her work lies a restrained, single-toned field, materiality pulses with vitality. Using Hanji pulp, charcoal powder, gold leaf, pearl dust, and diamond fragments, she builds up texture through repetition. The accumulation of these elements becomes a visual rhythm echoing the movement of the sea. This series originates from a deep contemplation of the sea’s changing nature, and the passing of time within it. Above and below the surface, between day and night, past and present—sound, color, and movement shift continuously. Oh’s canvas quietly resonates with that flux. Her work is a sea of life, a meditation on the absurdities of existence, and a message of human dignity and hope. It is visually rich yet conceptually disciplined, luminous yet never indulgent. After a single exhibition in Italy, she was invited by a national pavilion curator at the Venice Biennale—her work leaving a lasting impression. Her paintings are held in the collection of Bando Museum, ranked second among private art museums in China. She is also a represented artist at the 8-star Hotel Zabeel Saray and Dubai Mall in the UAE. Recently, through a collaboration with Katarina of Cokoon D’art in Zurich, she is expanding her international presence with exhibitions in Europe, including an upcoming project in Basel, Switzerland. 오지윤 작가의 화면은 단색 위에 쌓인 시간이다. 작가는 바다를 바라보며, 그 안에 내재한 감정과 질문, 그리고 빛을 수집한다. 작업의 바탕에는 단색의 절제된 화면이 있다. 그러나 그 위엔 물질의 생동감이 있다. 한지, 숯가루, 순금, 진주 가루, 다이아몬드 분말까지—다채로운 재료는 층을 이루며 깊이를 더하고, 거친 입자의 중첩은 바다가 가진 생명의 리듬을 시각적으로 구현한다. 이 시리즈는 변화하는 바다, 그 안에 담긴 존재와 시간에 대한 작가의 사유에서 비롯되었다. 수면 위와 수면 아래, 낮과 밤, 어제와 오늘. 끊임없이 바뀌는 소리와 색, 움직임은 오지윤의 화면 안에서 조용히 진동한다. 그의 작업은 생명의 바다이자, 부조리한 삶에 대한 번민이며, 동시에 희망의 메시지다. 단순하지만 가볍지 않고, 화려하지만 절제되어 있다. 단 한 번의 이탈리아 전시로 베니스비엔날레 해외 국가관 큐레이터의 주목을 받은 그는 이후 초청을 받아 국제 무대에 이름을 올렸다. 그의 작품은 중국 사립미술관 서열 2위인 반도미술관에 소장되었으며, 두바이 Zabeel Saray 호텔과 Dubai Mall에서는 전속 작가로 활동 중이다. 스위스 취리히에 기반을 둔 Cokoon D’art의 기획으로 유럽 주요 미술계와의 협업을 이어가며, 바젤로 향하는 전시 일정을 준비하고 있다.
