Moon SeonMee

문선미

Korean, b.-

Moon Seon Mee primarily works with oil on canvas, creating humorous and satirical portraits of various characters. The women depicted in her works do not conform to conventional ideals of beauty. Instead, they appear plump, with exaggerated cheekbones, stern or mischievous expressions, and even masculine features figures that may initially seem awkward or comical. Through these whimsical characters, the artist expresses metaphors that go beyond humor, hinting at deeper truths about life. The exaggerated female forms reflect her inner desire to break free from the socially imposed ideals of femininity. Rather than being shaped by external expectations, her figures assert the importance of self encouraging autonomy and the freedom to pursue one's desires. Her portraits serve as a stage where the artist’s internal conflicts unfold between the culturally conditioned woman and the self-directed individual. Through a wide range of facial expressions, Moon explores themes of psychological tension, desire, secrecy, sorrow, and self-reflection.
