Chun Kyungja

천경자

Korea, 1924 ~ 2015

Chun Kyung-Ja is widely regarded as one of the most prominent female painters in the history of modern and contemporary Korean art. She primarily depicted women and flowers, and was notable for her active travels abroad—an uncommon pursuit among artists of her time. From her late 40s to early 70s, she embarked on twelve sketching journeys to destinations including Tahiti, Europe, Africa, and Central and South America. These experiences played a crucial role in shaping her distinctive artistic style. Departing from traditional Korean painting techniques, she developed a unique visual language characterized by vivid colors and expressive depictions of exotic women and nature—imagery that came to define her oeuvre.
