Lee Sangwon (b. 1978, Korea) explores the everyday landscapes of leisure in contemporary society. His paintings focus on the paradox between the privatization of leisure as a personal experience and its simultaneous standardization through mass culture. By closely observing people’s shared patterns of rest, travel, and recreation, Lee transforms ordinary daily scenes into panoramic compositions that reveal collective social behavior. Through depictions of resorts and leisure spaces, his work reflects how individual memories accumulate into public memory, suggesting that moments of happiness render people equal beyond differences of region, culture, or race. Lee’s practice positions everyday life itself as both subject and artistic material.
