Seong TaeJin

성태진

Korean, b.1974

Seong Taejin uses Taekwon V, an iconic symbol of Korean popular culture, as his primary motif to explore contemporary life and society through humor and satire. His works freely incorporate familiar cultural references—including films, comics, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, popular songs, and traditional Korean poetry—while combining text and imagery to create distinctive visual narratives. In Seong's paintings, Taekwon V is no longer a heroic figure saving the world. Instead, he is reimagined as an ordinary person who delivers food, shares drinks with friends, and experiences love and heartbreak. At once innocent, humorous, indecisive, and vulnerable, this transformed Taekwon V reflects the realities and contradictions of modern life, serving as a mirror of ourselves. Drawing on the collective nostalgia of childhood memories, Seong Taejin uses Taekwon V to portray the irony and challenges faced by a generation whose dreams of heroism have given way to everyday realities. The artist's use of comic-inspired flatness and the integration of text and image enhance both the humor and emotional resonance of his work, while embodying his distinctive artistic philosophy of “Funism.” Through wit and playfulness, his paintings invite viewers to reflect on contemporary desires, frustrations, and the complexities of human experience.
