To be familiar with something is to believe that we already know it. Taekwon V brings to mind a hero; a moon jar is first perceived as a white, rounded form; and a character is often met with the immediate impression of cuteness. 《FAMILIAR, UNFAMILIAR》 explores how images we take for granted are transformed into new meanings and experiences through the intervention of the artist. Seong TaeJin draws on Taekwon V, an icon of popular culture, but does not reproduce it as a conventional hero. By reimagining the character in a tracksuit, giving it a more human presence, he subverts the very image of the hero. He also transforms the moon jar into his own visual language through the processes of carving and painting on wood. MeMe has continuously developed PIGME, a character of her own creation. More than simply a cute character, PIGME serves as the artist’s multi-persona and a medium through which she reflects the contemporary human condition. This exploration extends to questions of happiness, identity, and the pursuit of an active, self-directed life. Jin HwanMin begins with the familiar form of the moon jar, yet form itself is not the central concern. He blows soap bubbles mixed with pigment onto a surface, embracing the stains and traces left behind when they burst as part of the artwork. Expanding this “record of breath” across canvas and three-dimensional forms, he continues to explore what it means to leave traces through breath rather than words. The three artists differ in generation and medium. Yet they converge in their approach to transforming given images into new worlds through the intervention of their hands, bodies, and breath, refusing to leave familiar images unchanged. The exhibition takes place during the final two months of 2026. The time behind us has become familiar, while the time ahead remains unknown. The moment when a familiar image becomes unfamiliar through an artist’s intervention resonates with the feelings of audiences as they bid farewell to one year and welcome the next. Visitors may arrive expecting to see images they already know, only to encounter scenes they have never seen before. The familiar never remains unchanged. When touched by someone’s hands, body, and breath, it passes into another form. At the close of 2026, this exhibition invites us to witness that moment of transformation.
