Emotions are not singular. Like color and light, they resonate with different intensities in each person. This exhibition explores how emotion is transformed into form, color, and rhythm through the distinct visual languages of four artists. Rather than expressing feelings directly, they allow subtle emotions to permeate the structure of the image, the density of color, and the flow of rhythm. At the point where the end of the year meets a new beginning, their works invite viewers to pause amid the busyness of passing time and turn their gaze inward, reflecting on their own emotions. Within the visual resonance created by differing emotional states, stillness and vitality, warmth and tension coexist. Through this convergence, the artists demonstrate that emotion is not a linear phenomenon, but a spectrum.

The curator's eye... The essential tasks of a museum curator are to preserve, study, and enrich the collection for which he is responsible. To do this, it is imperative to learn how to see and educate one's eye. Images are essential to any art historian. From my teenage years onwards, I collected postcards, photographs, and clippings from sales catalogs in shoeboxes to build up a visual repertoire of the works of painters, draftsmen, sculptors, and architects of modern Europe (16th–18th centuries AD). These images were a source of learning for me and helped me exercise my memory. It was and still is necessary to review them and see the works and places they illustrate in order to immerse oneself in their characteristics. It is a long, constant, ongoing task, but it is the only way to better understand those who created them. A work of art requires careful viewing. The memory must be imbued with it. Only then will it be possible to identify the style and genius of a particular artist, to understand his technique, to grasp what makes him unique, what sets him apart from others. This knowledge acquired over the years undeniably influences the way I look at art and then, in a creative process, construct the image I want to convey of the work I am looking at. It then becomes a question of framing, lighting, color range, and the juxtaposition of forms that reflect a more personal perception of the work of art. I have been taking photographs for a long time. At first, they were intended for my visual repertoire. Then came the time to write books, where, in order to illustrate my point, it was necessary to use images to accompany my text and make it easier to understand. Framing then became very important. What should be shown, which element, which detail, which point of view, which perspective ?

천 년 가까운 세월 동안 원주의 반계리 은행나무는 묵묵히 한 자리를 지켜오며 생명과 시간을 담아온 존재다. 작가는 이 거대한 나무 앞에서 1년이 넘는 시간 동안 현장을 찾아 붓을 들었고, 매 계절, 매 순간 달라지는 빛과 바람을 몸과 마음으로 마주하며 나무가 품은 시간의 무게와 생명력을 화폭에 담았다. 〈천년의 노래: 가을의 서사〉는 사계절을 기록한 연작 가운데 특히 ‘가을’의 서사에 주목한다. 노란 은행잎이 반짝이며 계절을 물들이는 순간은 한 해를 견뎌낸 결실이자, 우리 삶의 성숙을 비추는 거울이다. “나무가 나를 그리고 있다”는 깨달음을 통해, 한그루의 나무는 한 사람을, 숲은 군중을, 산은 인생 그 자체를 은유한다. 이 작품들은 현장에서 마주한 순간의 고유한 가치를 보여준다. 작가는 살아있는 대상 앞에서 시시각각 변하는 바람과 빛, 계절의 변화까지 받아들이며 붓을 움직였다. 아침의 은은한 빛이 서서히 정오의 선명한 색채로 스며들고, 바람에 흔들리는 나뭇잎 하나하나가 시간의 결을 따라 화면에 쌓인다. 사진이 한순간을 고정한다면 사생은 흐르는 시간을 견디며 이어지는 모든 순간을 담아내는 지속의 행위다. 완성된 작품은 단순한 풍경이 아닌, 작가가 몸으로 경험한 순간과 변화를 담은 기록이다. 은행나무 앞에 선 작가가 그러했듯, 관람객 또한 작품을 통해 단순한 자연의 형상을 넘어 가을과 함께 작품을 사유하며 계절의 변화를 느낄 수 있는 전시를 경험하길 바란다. 우리가 어떻게 시간을 견디고, 어떤 열매를 맺으며, 어떻게 익어가는가. 그 물음 앞에서 은행나무가 품은 천년의 숨결과 삶의 울림이 조용히 전해질 것이다.

어둠이 깊을수록 별은 더욱 빛나고, 황무지에서 피어난 꽃은 더 강한 생명력을 품는다. 한국 현대미술의 역사가 막 태동하던 혼돈의 시기, 천경자, 박래현, 윤석남, 방혜자, 류민자. 이 다섯 여성 작가는 자신만의 빛으로 시대의 어둠을 밝히고, 예술의 황무지에 꿋꿋이 길을 내며 독자적인 세계를 구축해왔다. 《찬란한 빛과 예술혼》은 이들의 독창적인 예술 세계를 조명하고, 한국 미술사에서 여성 작가들이 남긴 미학적 성취와 역사적 의미를 국내외 관람객들과 공유하고자 마련된 특별 기획전이다. 이번 전시는 다섯 작가의 주요 작품을 한자리에 소개함으로써, 한국 여성 작가들의 예술적 깊이와 다양성을 보여주는 공익적 플랫폼의 역할을 수행한다. 회화, 드로잉, 설치, 미디어 아트 등 다양한 장르를 아우르는 구성으로, 작가별 섹션을 통해 입체적인 감상이 가능하도록 기획하였다. 특히 본 전시는 2025년 프리즈 서울(Frieze Seoul) 및 키아프(KIAF)가 열리는 시기와 맞물려, 8월 22일부터 10월 28일까지 아트큐브 2R2 전관에서 개최된다. 전시 기간 중 국내외 갤러리스트, 컬렉터, 미술 관계자들의 방문이 집중될 것으로 기대되며, 프리즈 주간 프로그램인 ‘청담 나잇(Cheongdam Night)’ 행사에도 참여하여 작가와 작품을 더욱 밀도 있게 소개하는 특별 프로그램을 진행할 예정이다. 전시 종료 후에는 세계적인 경매사 소더비(Sotheby’s)와의 협업을 통해 일부 주요 작품을 글로벌 옥션에 출품할 계획이다. 이를 통해 한국 여성 작가들의 작품에 대한 국제적 재조명은 물론, 그들의 예술 유산이 지속적으로 계승될 수 있는 기반을 공고히 하고자 한다. - The darker the night, the brighter the stars shine. Flowers that bloom in barren lands carry the strongest lifeforce. During the turbulent early years of Korea’s modern art history, five women Chun KyungJa, Park ReHyun, Yoon SukNam, Bang Hai Ja, and Ryu MinJa forged their own paths, illuminating the darkness of their time and cultivating singular artistic worlds with unwavering resolve. The Light and Legacy is a special exhibition that highlights the distinctive practices of these pioneering women artists. It seeks to share their aesthetic achievements and historical significance with both domestic and international audiences. By presenting their representative works in one place, the exhibition functions as a cultural platform that showcases the depth and diversity of Korean women’s art. Featuring painting, drawing, installation, and media art across multiple sections, the show offers a multidimensional experience of each artist’s journey and vision. This exhibition is scheduled to run from August 22 to October 28, 2025, coinciding with Frieze Seoul and KIAF, when global art professionals and collectors gather in the city. During this key week, the gallery also participates in the Cheongdam Night program to host a special event that allows for deeper engagement with the works and the artists behind them. Following the exhibition, select works will be presented at a global Sotheby’s auction in collaboration with the renowned international auction house. This initiative aims to foster renewed international recognition of Korean women artists and to ensure their artistic legacies continue to resonate and expand across generations.

"오늘날 사회에서 상징은 '복사된 것'이 아니라,'건설된 것'이다" STONROK의 ‘POST ICON’ 프로젝트는 영원한 상징의 고정된 가치보다 ‘기호화된 정체성’을 드러낸다. 이 작업은 잊히고, 건너지고, 이어지는 것에 대한 시각적 계약이다. 실명도 없고, 구체적 이력도 없는 인물들이 등장하며, 그들은 직접적으로 응시하지 않고, 복제되지도 않는 ‘무명의 목소리’를 담고 있다. 본 시리즈는 STONROK의 대표 연작 《Art or Not》의 개념을 계승한 확장 시리즈이기도 하다. 《Art or Not》이 대중문화와 예술 사이의 긴장을 유머와 해학으로 풀어냈다면, 《POST ICON》은 그 흐름 위에서 기호의 감정화와 구조적 시선의 내면화에 집중한다. 두 연작은 서로를 반사하며, 이번 전시에서는 선행 시리즈의 주요 작품들과 함께 병렬적으로 전시되어 ‘상징의 진화 과정’을 관람자에게 제시한다.

[Second Glance : 두 번째 시선]은 익숙한 것에 새로운 관점을 부여하는 두 예술가, 히로유키와 문선미의 작품 세계를 조명한다. 두 작가의 작품을 처음 보면 만화적이고 귀여운 형식에 관람자에게 즉각적인 감정과 공감을 준다. ‘귀엽다.’ 라는 첫 감각은 자칫 가볍게 소비되기 쉬우나 히로유키와 문선미의 작업은 그 익숙한 형식을 빌려 오히려 낯설고 복잡한 정서를 길어 올린다. 단순하고 아기자기한 이미지 속에는 감정의 진폭, 사회적 통찰, 존재에 대한 유머러스한 물음표가 숨어 있으며, 이 전시는 그 안에 숨겨진 두 번째 층위에 주목한다. 히로유키는 레오나르도 다빈치, 반고흐, 얀 반 에이크, 구스타프 클림트, 마그리트 등의 명화 속 인물을 고양이로 표현하여 미술사와 현대미술 사이의 경계를 흐리게 만들고, 문선미는 독특한 생김새의 여성 인물을 통해 사회가 요구하는 여성상과 내면의 욕망 사이의 갈등을 표현한다. 두 작가 모두 유머와 해학을 도구로 삼아 익숙한 이미지를 다시 바라보도록 초대한다. 이 전시는 첫 눈에는 보이지 않았던 것들이 두 번째 시선에서 드러나는 순간, 관람자로 하여금 단순한 감상자에서 적극적인 참여자로 전환되는 경험을 제안하며 그 익숙함의 온도가 어떻게 변화하는지 탐구하게 된다. 이 전시는 첫인상의 유머를 넘어, 감정의 굴곡과 사회의 균열을 따뜻한 언어로 건네는 예술적 제안이다.
